Best registered agent services compared for non-resident LLC owners

Best Registered Agent for Non-Residents

Short answer

The best registered agent for a non-resident owner is Northwest: $125 per year that has never increased, every document scanned to your dashboard, and their address on your public filing instead of yours. Bizee is the cheapest entry at $0, and Registered Agents Inc is the privacy specialist.

Choosing the best registered agent matters more when you live abroad than when you live in Ohio. A US-based owner who misses a scanned notice can drive to the office. You cannot. The agent is the only physical presence your company has in the country, and every state notice reaches you through them or not at all.

Why trust this list. FormedAbroad is published by Zyra Alpha LLC, one of three Wyoming LLCs we own and run from Southeast Asia. All three use Northwest, paid at full price. Where we have not personally used a provider, we say so in its section rather than implying experience we do not have.

Best registered agent services compared

Prices reflect August 2026 published rates. The three-year column is the one that matters — an advertised $0 rarely survives renewal.

ProviderYear 1Renewal3-year totalScans all mail
Northwest$39 + state fee$125 flat$289Yes
Bizee$0 + state fee$149$298No
Registered Agents Inc$200$200$600Yes
Harbor Compliance$99$149$397Partial
ZenBusiness$199$199$597Partial
LegalZoom$249$299$847Partial

The spread tells you a lot about how the best registered agent services are priced: the same statutory service costs $289 or $847 over three years depending on who you pick. Nothing in the more expensive options is worth the difference for a solo non-resident owner.

What makes the best registered agent when you are not in the US

Most roundups rank on price and dashboard design. Those are the wrong criteria for a foreign owner. Here is what we actually weight.

Does it scan everything, or only legal documents?

This is the single biggest differentiator between the best registered agent services and the rest. Service of process — an actual lawsuit — is rare. The document that kills companies is the annual report reminder nobody read. A provider that scans only legal mail leaves you blind to exactly the correspondence that matters most.

Whose address appears on the public filing?

State business registries are public and scraped continuously by data brokers. If your home address in Manila or Lisbon goes on the filing, it stays searchable permanently. The best registered agent for a non-resident lists their own address by default rather than making privacy an upsell.

Is the renewal price honest?

The best registered agent charges the same in year five as in year one. A $0 first year followed by $199 renewals is a marketing structure, not a discount. Judge on the three-year total, not the headline.

Can you reach a human across time zones?

When a state rejects a filing and you are eight time zones away, the difference between phone support and a ticket queue becomes concrete.

1. Northwest — the best registered agent overall

★ Best overall

Northwest Registered Agent

$39 formation + state fee · then $125/yr flat · operating since 1998
★★★★★

Northwest is the agent for all three of our Wyoming entities, and it is our pick for the best registered agent for anyone forming from abroad. The reasons are structural rather than cosmetic.

The price has not moved: $125 per year, per entity, the same figure in year one and year five. They scan every document that arrives — not a curated subset — and it appears in the dashboard directly, with no forwarding request and no additional fee. Their address goes on the state filing by default, keeping yours off the public record.

From our own signup: there was no friction as a non-resident. No US phone number required, no SSN field blocking the form, no verification step that quietly assumes you live in the country. Support replies came back quickly and from someone who understood the question.

Strengths

  • $125/yr flat, no renewal increase
  • Scans every document received
  • Privacy by default, no data sold
  • No upsell screens at checkout
  • Direct phone support
  • $100/yr across five or more states

Trade-offs

  • $39 upfront where rivals show $0
  • Dated dashboard design
  • EIN filing is a paid add-on

2. Bizee — cheapest entry point

Best zero upfront

Bizee (formerly Incfile)

$0 formation + state fee · then $149/yr · over 1M businesses served
★★★★☆

Bizee is not the best registered agent on features, but it wins decisively on entry price, which is a legitimate reason to pick it if cash flow is the constraint this month. Formation is free beyond the state fee, and the first year of agent service is included.

One element genuinely favours non-residents: the $99 Premium bundle includes EIN assistance. A US citizen should skip it — the IRS issues EINs free online in minutes. But that path requires an SSN. Without one you are filing Form SS-4 by fax, so paid help has real value. Our EIN without an SSN guide covers both routes.

A note on method: we have not opened a Bizee account ourselves. This section reflects published pricing and documented customer reports.

Strengths

  • $0 formation, state fee only
  • Free first year of agent service
  • EIN help bundled at $99
  • Large, established operation

Trade-offs

  • $149/yr renewal, above Northwest
  • A third party is the actual agent
  • Does not scan all mail by default
  • Long checkout with upsells

Lowest entry price

$0 formation plus the state fee, with the first year of agent service included.

3. Registered Agents Inc — privacy specialist

Best for privacy

Registered Agents Inc

$200/yr · nationwide coverage · privacy-focused positioning
★★★★☆

Registered Agents Inc is the best registered agent for one specific profile: it charges more and targets owners for whom anonymity is the priority rather than price. For most non-residents this is overkill — Northwest already keeps your address off the filing at $75 less per year. If your situation genuinely demands maximum separation, it earns its place on the shortlist.

What to avoid when choosing a registered agent

Never act as your own registered agent. As a non-resident you cannot legally do it — the role requires a physical street address in the state of formation, staffed during business hours. A virtual mailbox does not qualify.

The requirement is statutory rather than a vendor upsell. Wyoming sets it out in § 17-28-101, and the Wyoming Secretary of State will not process a filing without a named agent holding a physical in-state address. Every other state applies an equivalent rule.

Free offers with no stated renewal. The best registered agent publishes its renewal rate before checkout. The service costs the provider money. If the renewal price is not published before checkout, assume it is high.

Providers who make privacy an add-on. If keeping your address off the public filing costs extra, the base product is not built for you.

Bundles you will not use. Compliance calendars, business licence research, seal kits — these inflate the total on packages aimed at first-time US founders.

If price is your deciding factor, our cheapest registered agent comparison ranks purely on three-year cost. And if you are still choosing where to file, start with the best state for a non-resident LLC.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best registered agent for a non-resident?

Northwest, for most people. It costs $125 per year with no renewal increase, scans every document received, and lists its own address on your public state filing. We use it for three Wyoming entities.

Can a non-resident be their own registered agent?

No. The role requires a physical street address in the state of formation with someone available during business hours. Living abroad makes this impossible, and a PO box or virtual mailbox does not satisfy the requirement.

Do I need an SSN to appoint a registered agent?

No. None of the providers listed require the owner to hold a Social Security Number. Your LLC will still need an EIN, which you can obtain without an SSN.

How much should the best registered agent cost?

Between $100 and $150 per year is the fair market range in 2026. Below that, expect a renewal increase. Above $200, you are paying for bundled services rather than the statutory function.

Can I change registered agents later?

Yes, in every state, by filing a change-of-agent form. It is routine, and some providers process the switch and cover the state fee for incoming customers.

Do I need a registered agent and a virtual mailbox?

Usually yes. The agent receives legal and state documents at a statutory address; a virtual mailbox handles general business correspondence and gives you a usable address for banking. See registered agent vs virtual address.
